Professional Land Surveyor

In order to qualify as a land surveyor in Wisconsin, applicants must have the education and experience, and pass the examinations, as indicated below.

Education and Experience

Before July 1, 2000:

  1. Completion of a course in land surveying of not less than 2 years duration approved by the land surveyor section together with 2 years of practice in land surveying work of satisfactory character which indicates that the applicant is competent to be placed in responsible charge of such work. This qualifying route applies only to applications submitted to the land surveyor section before July 1, 2000.
  2. A record of 6 years of practice in land surveying of satisfactory character, which indicates that the applicant is competent to be placed in responsible charge of such work. This qualifying route applies only to applications submitted to the land surveyor section before July 1, 2000.
  3. Completion of an apprenticeship training course in land surveying prescribed by the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations (DILHR). This qualifying route applies only to applications submitted to the land surveyor section before July 1, 2000. Contact the Department for further information.

After June 30, 2000:

  1. Receipt of a bachelor's degree in a course of not less than 4 years in land surveying or a related field that is approved by the land surveyor section, and at least 2 years of land surveying practice of satisfactory character that indicates that the applicant is competent to practice land surveying. This qualifying route applies only to applications submitted to the land surveyor section after June 30, 2000.
  2. Receipt of an associate degree in a course of not less than 2 years duration in land surveying or a related field approved by the land surveyor section and at least 4 years of land surveying practice of satisfactory character that indicates that the applicant is competent to practice land surveying. This qualifying route applies only to applications submitted to the land surveyor section after June 30, 2000.
  3. A record of at least 10 years of land surveying practice of satisfactory character that indicates that the applicant is competent to practice land surveying. This qualifying route applies only to applications submitted to the land surveyor section after June 30, 2000.

Examinations

All applicants must take and pass national examinations on the fundamentals and principles and practices of land surveying, and an examination on surveying practice in Wisconsin.

In order to take the fundamentals examination, applicants must have completed a course in land surveying of not less than 2 years duration approved by the land surveyor section, or have at least 4 years of practice in land surveying or a combination of work and training in a course in land surveying and practice in land surveying which totals at least 4 years.

In order to take the principles and practice examinations, which includes the Wisconsin examination, applicants shall have completed the education necessary to take the fundamentals examination with at least 2 years of approved practiced in land surveying, or, have at least 5 years of approved practice in land surveying, or, a combination of at least 5 years of approved work and training in a course in land surveying and practice in land surveying.

Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.

In order to qualify as a professional engineer in Wisconsin, applicants must have the education and experience, and pass the examination or examinations, as indicated below.

Education and Experience

An applicant may satisfy the education and experience requirements for registration by any one of the following 4 ways:

  1. Graduation from an ABET accredited program in engineering approved by the examining board as of satisfactory standing in an engineering course of not less than 4 years, together with an additional 4 years of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the examining board and indicating that the applicant is competent to be placed in responsible charge of such work, or,
  2. a specific record of 8 or more years of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the examining board and indicating that the applicant is competent to be placed in responsible charge of such work, or,
  3. a specific record by an applicant of 12 years or more of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the examining board and indicating that the applicant is competent to practice engineering, or,
  4. a diploma of graduation or a certificate from an engineering school or college approved by the examining board as of satisfactory standing in an engineering course of not less than 4 years, together with an additional 8 years of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the examining board and indicating that the applicant is competent to practice engineering.

  1. Applicants who qualify under "a" or "b" above must pass the national fundamentals of engineering and principles and practices of engineering examinations, and the Wisconsin examination on barrier free design.
  2. Applicants who qualify under "c" above must pass the national principles and practice of engineering examination and the Wisconsin barrier free design examination and submit a record which specifically describes the knowledge of mathematics, the physical sciences and the principles of engineering which the applicant has acquired by practical experience or professional education.
  3. Applicants who qualify under "d" above are not required to take any examinations, but must submit a statement describing provisions of Wisconsin law which govern the practice of engineering and which concern the design needs of people with physical disabilities; and evidence that the applicant has had at least 6 months of engineering experience in Wisconsin or has had sufficient contacts with this state to make the applicant familiar with Wisconsin engineering law and practice.

In order to be eligible to take the fundamentals of engineering examination, an applicant must be at least a senior in an accredited B.S. engineering program or have at least 4 years of engineering experience qualifying under Wisconsin administrative code A-E 4.03, or have a combination of qualifying education under A-E 4.05 and experience under A-E 4.03 totaling at least 4 years.

In order to be eligible to take the principles and practice of engineering examination, an applicant must have a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited engineering program and at least 4 years of experience qualifying under A-E 4.03, or, have at least 8 years of engineering experience qualifying under A-E 4.03, or, have a combination of engineering experience qualifying under A-E 4.03 and education qualifying under A-E 4.05 totaling at least 8 years.

The barrier free design examination will be mailed to applicants when all national examination requirements have been completed and an application for licensure has been requested.

Other Certification: Individuals may be certified as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), if they have passed the fundamentals of engineering examination and have either graduated in engineering from a school approved by the board, or have a specific record of 4 or more years of engineering work of a character satisfactory to the board. Convictions and Pending Charges: Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.
