The courses must be taken at a college, university, or community college approved by the Board.

Professional Engineers
An applicant may qualify to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (EIT) examination if the applicant:
1. is in the process of completing a four year curriculum in engineering at a college or university within the six months after the next scheduled administration of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, and evidence of such is provided by the college or university; or,
2. has been graduated from a college or university on completion of a four year curriculum in engineering or its equivalent, that the Board approves.
Requirements:
An applicant may qualify for the Professional Engineer's Examination by meeting the educational and/or experience requirements specified in one of the following subsections of the Professional
Engineers law:
Subsection 14-305(b) - EAC/ABET APPROVED OPTION
1. has graduated from a college or university on completion of at least a four year curriculum in engineering, or its equivalent, that the Board approves ;
2. has at least four years of work experience in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board and that indicates to the Board that the applicant is competent to practice engineering. If an applicant has completed graduate study in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board, the Board may allow up to 1 year credit toward the experience requirement; and
3. has passed an eight hour written examination in the fundamentals of engineering given by the Board; or
Subsection 14-305(c) - NON EAC/ABET APPROVED OR FOREIGN CURRICULUM OPTION
1. has been graduated from a college or university on completion of at least a four year curriculum in engineering, or its equivalent, that the Board has not approved;
2. Has at least eight years of work experience in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board and that indicates to the Board that the applicant is competent to practice engineering;
3. Has passed an eight hour written examination in the fundamentals of engineering given by the Board; or
Subsection 14-305(d) - EXPERIENCE OPTION
1. has at least 12 years of work experience in engineering that is satisfactory to the Board, during at least five years of which the applicant has been in responsible charge, if the collective experience indicates to the Board that the applicant may be completed to practice engineering; ( Responsible charge means that the individual has direct control and personal supervision of engineering that requires initiative, professional skill, and independent judgement.)
2. An applicant may substitute a complete scholastic year of at least 30 credit hours in a college or university or engineering approved by the Board for each of these years of experience, upon demonstrating grades satisfactory to the Board.
3. If the applicant has successfully completed one or more years of a college or university curriculum in engineering that has not been approved by the Board (i.e. not accredited by EAC/ABET) the Board may allow, for each of those years, a credit of up to six months towards the experience requirements.
Completed applications will be submitted to the Board for review. If approved, the applicant will be so notified, in writing. Once the applicant has successfully passed the examination, the applicant will receive licensing information with their successful grade notice. The candidate may elect to complete an electronic licensing application via the Internet, pay the $20 fee by credit card and will receive the license within 5 business days. Application may also be made on a paper form and mailed to the Board's office. The license issued will expire two years from the date of issuance as printed on the license.
