Lucile Smith
Area of Expertise: Boundary Law
Being a woman in the land surveying business is a rarity. Being a woman that co-owns one of the largest surveying companies in Tennessee is even rarer. Lucile Smith, RLS, has beaten the odds and proves that yet again, "a woman's work is never done."

Lucile is one of four women licensed as surveyors in Tennessee. She is president of L.I. Smith & Associates, a family-owned surveying business with offices in Paris and Jackson, Tennessee and Starkville, Mississippi.

Lucile's love for surveying began by helping her husband Larry in the field. She was determined to get a license of her own and passed the surveyor exam in 1986. Trudging through the field with two small children in tow was only natural for Lucile. She comes from a long line of surveyors. Her great-grandfather was a county surveyor for Gibson County, Tennessee. Lucile's enthusiasm for the industry is passed on to her entire family. Her son Patrick also helps run the business. The other son, Nathaniel, works for an engineering firm across the state in Chattanooga.

Lucile's determination and excellence in her work has allowed L.I. Smith & Associates to grow into a powerhouse of surveying companies. The firm now has 51 employees and has moved to a new 10,000 square foot building.

However, the most important aspect of Lucile's zeal for surveying is shown by her dedication to the industry. She has expertise in all areas from fieldwork to training other surveyors to management of the company. She is highly regarded and is seen as a role model by other women in the industry. She truly is a symbol for the growing business of surveying.
